Help Getting ID card and all the benefits while DH is deployed

    Advertisements
So my DF and I are planning on getting married about 5 days before he leaves for deployment. It takes about 10 to get the marriage certificate. Is there a way he can set it up for me to go on base and take care of everything by myself? Or, can we just copy the license and use that? Any help is appreciated!!

You can go on base and get it done if he gets you a POA to be able to.

Are you guys having a big ceremony or just a JOP? If its a JOP I would suggest doing it earlier just so the stress is off you....

When DH and I got married via JOP we got our marriage license the same day. We just went to the main courthouse and got official copies made. Hope this helps.

They would not accept our customer copy of the license when we got married. We had to wait for the certified copy of the marriage certificate. He should be able to give you special Power of Attorney for PSD (to add you to his Page 2) and DEERS I believe (you need to enroll in DEERS to get your ID). Or he may be able to fill out and sign the form and then give it to you (my ex was able to do this for the kids... so I was able to go get their IDs without him present). You may have trouble getting on base without an ID to get this stuff done, so you might need an escort for that (depending on the base you're at). Once you're enrolled in DEERS and have your ID, you are automatically enrolled in Tricare Standard. If you want to switch to Tricare Prime, you can do that without him present.

When we found out that DH was deploying a couple weeks after our wedding and that we wouldn't get our marriage certificate right away, we decided to get legally married about a month and a half before our wedding so that we could get everything taken care of. It was really nice to not be rushing around in those couple weeks before he left, trying to get things taken care. Not sure if that's an option for you though.

    Good luck!

This is what my ex and I did when I lived in WA. Well, we got married on a Saturday, but we took the signed (by the minister) marriage license to the county courthouse on Monday and they gave us the marriage certificate immediately.

However, in San Diego, where DH and I got married--we got married AT THE COURTHOUSE and they still couldn't give us the certificate until the following week. I literally had to go back the next week to the office right next door to where we got married to get the copy. I even checked earlier to see if it was ready and it wasn't. They just put them all into a pile and process them later. Crazy, huh?

yeah DH and I got legally married a month and a half before our actual ceremony for the same reason. The Army actually sent him home on a pass to do it and told him he should go ahead and get it taken care of (all business to the Army lol). DH then enrolled me in DEERS from his base and I got my ID at the base near me. Maybe he can enroll you in deers right before he leaves from his base? It would make things wayyy easier.

Some bases will allow you on base with visitors passes, but some have much higher security.

you need a marriage LICENSE to get married in the first place. Once you are married and it is signed, it becomes a CERTIFICATE. You need a certified copy of the CERTIFICATE to get enrolled in DEERS.

Yes, they need an official copy with the seal to put you on his page 2 in his service record and for DEERS. You can do it he just needs to make sure he give you a POA and for the ID you need the DD 1172 and your dh will need to get that to you.

ALSO many newly married service members make this mistake, they need to change their SGLI to put their spouse as the beneficiary. A lot think since the spouse is on their page 2 that the SGLI will automatically go to their spouse if the worst case scenario happens. It does not, it goes to whoever was listed as the beneficiary of the SGLI

I got both my marriage license and certificate on the same day. We did a JOP service. Also make sure he makes you his POA or you won't be able to do anything while he's gone.

Thanks. I was told that at Clark County (Las Vegas) they enter you in a system and you can order official copies of the certificate which can take up to 10 days to be entered. I wasn't sure if I could have official copies made of the license in the mean time until we got the certificate. (I've never done this before lol I think since LV does so many it can be a bit different than other places.) Or maybe I am just confusing myself.... which is possible... alot going on right now.
