Exclamation tricare- how to get second opinion? any info appreciated

    Advertisements
As some of you might know, my husband was injured on his jump on Sunday. There isn't a set in stone procedure that we can be certain of and his pcp has informed us of this. It seems as though he may be leaning towards one option, however dh and I aren't completely sure this is the method we wish to take. How can we go about getting a second opinion through tricare prime? Would it have to be referred by the physician or could I attempt to contact a neurosurgeon from an outside hospital (which may or may not be a civilian facility)? Sorry if this sounds confusing, its been an exhausting week thus far. I can clarify if need be. I plan on going to the tricare office tomorrow morning to see what they say but I was wondering if anyone on here has had any experience obtaining a second opinion with tricare. Any info/input is appreciated, thanks.

If he is active duty he calls the appointment line and asks for an appointment to see a new doctor to obtain a second opinion before you make a final decision. If he wants to see a specialist, he would ask that doctor for a referral. He's in the military so they aren't keen to send you to a civilian provider unless they can't care for him, which would be something pretty major. If you want a civilian doc that is certainly something you can do at your own expense.

Ok that makes sense, however there is actually only one surgeon who is equipped to handle his particular situation at this hospital. When he was brought into the er on Sunday afternoon they were initially saying that he would be transported to chapel hill because they did not think that they had a neurosergeon specializing in spine surgery but a few hours later they found out they did. Would they allow for him to get a second opinion outside of this hospital seeing that there aren't any other surgeons here with the qualifications to give an educated opinion? The orthopedic surgeon who is checking in on us right now has said that he doesn't feel comfortable giving an opinion. The surgeon who is dh's pcp has been in the field since yesterday at noon and we won't have contact with him again until tomorrow evening at the earliest.

You would have to talk to the MTF about that. They may opt to transfer him to a larger military hospital. I doubt that they will go to a civilian when they have military facilities that can handle him else where.

Ok cool, thanks. That's kind of what I was thinking too that they would opt to find another military facility if they gave us the go ahead for a second opinion. Ill still run by the tricare office here at the hospital tomorrow morning to see what they have to say.
