    Mental Health

    Advertisements
Hi everyone. I was wondering if Tricare covers mental health (such as seeing a psychologist). I'm on Tricare Prime. Do I need a referral? Can I find my own doctor off base or do I need to use the naval doctors?

    Thanks so much in advance!

You can see a theripist (off base) for I think 12 visits without a referral from Tricare. After those are finished, if your therapist thinks you need more therapy, they will put in the referral for you.

Okay so just to make sure I can choose a doctor off base that accepts tricare, and see them for 12 visits until i have to get a referral?

Call Tricare (in your region) and ask them for a list of approved providers. I think that's all I did when I saw someone before.

I actually saw a psychologist at Naval Hospital before too--she was active duty, but I liked her a lot. I don't think ever MTF has a Mental Health clinic though.

You can see a psychiatrist or a psychologist without a referral for eight visits. I know this because my son is in the process of seeing a psychiatrist, he was just diagnosed with Aspergers by a psychiatrist.

Totally confused. What do you mean it can make it so you pcs overseas?

I think you meant "can't" PCS...but I have never heard that before...

sorry I was typing while nursing the baby.
Having a mental health record can effect your Comman sponsership for overseas bases. Like england has a high chance of not taking you if you have a history of depression and are taking pills or still in counceling.
    (I just went through this)
Try to see someone off base. I know the air force has councelers thats don't keep records so they don't count against you! wish I would of went there first.

What a mess!! I guess I can understand them trying to look out for the best of the family. Generally speaking, uprooting the family and PCS overseas could be a difficult element if someone is already struggling with depression/etc.

also I know with england is they have a very small mental health clinic and its not like you can go off base when you are overseas. (also its super rainy over there so alot of people get depressed from no sun)
