Question about BAH and living in base housing
Someone told me that there are certain housing areas that will allow you to to keep SOME of your BAH, instead of having to give it all up to live in base housing. Is this true??

yes, but only in a very few housing areas- and as a PP stated they are usually substandard.
in most cases this is not the case.

Usually if they have CRAPPY housing that's going to be demolished, they'll give you a discount while you live there. You'll probably end up having to move out with a few months so the "savings" will go towards moving to a new house unless they foot the bill for your move. Still it's really not worth it, most of the homes they'll offer are run down and have lots of issues. Not every base does this and the ones that do are usually privatized so it's the privatized company that offers the discount.

I read something a few years back in Army Times that they were planning on doing something like this - like you could pick where on post you lived and if you lived in a "Cheaper" housing area then you could pocket the difference. You could also pick to live in a place that was more expensive, but you'd have to pay the difference.
I don't think they ever did it though.

my house on KBay was like this. It was a certain type of housing where another company owned it and we essentially paid rent. All the homes were basically the same size and the rent was 1300.00ish for EVERYONE regardless of rank. We made out like thieves living in that house because our BAH was alot more than that. If we would have had to pay his hawaii e7 bah for that townhouse I would have moved in a heartbeat.
I don't think that type of housing is very common though........and I wouldn't want to live somewhere that was substandard....

Ditto--there are a few housing areas like that here in Hawaii, they are substandard and so you only pay the single rate.
OMG Amy I bet you guys did make out!! Holy crap, $1300 vs E7 HI BAH! You go girl!
