BAH for single marines

Hi,

My friend is an E-5 and recently moved out of the barracks. He wants to receive BAH but seems to be having trouble figuring the whole thing out, so right now he is paying rent with his regular pay. Does anyone know anything about what he needs to do?

He needs to check with Finance. See if they have him as living in the dorms or living in town.

He may need to take in a copy of his lease.

He's the one in the service he can very easily get the information if he just asked. He should have gotten BAH settled before moving out. There really isn't much you can do to help him as he's the one with the access to the information not you.

Why didn't your boyfriend check all this out, before getting into a lease?!?

Was he authorized to live off base? I know most E-5s are...but every now and then there is a circumstance where they might require him to live on base

This is most important. And to do that he would have to check with his command, put in his notice for his dorm room and go to finance to get his pay sorted out to get BAH. It is not just move out of the dorm and get bah.

I thought Marines weren't allowed to live off base unless they are married (at least for E-5 and below). That could be why he isn't getting BAH. He definitely needs to find out if he's authorized to live off base.

Just asked DH. He said that it depends on the unit. They don't let single Marines live off base in Hawaii because of the cost of living, but other places they do.
