My husband is currently at Ft. Gordon doing his AIT. I am due to have a baby on October 17th, and we know that he gets his 10 days and everything, but when it comes down to it, who decides if he gets it or not? Is it like, REQUIRED that he gets it, is there a certain amount of time he has to ask for it?
I really don't know a darn thing about it! Someone who is experienced fill meh in, please!

It depends on his command, they do not have to let him have it, if they don't want to.

I was thinking doubtful if they are in school but never guaranteed. and if I remember right DF had to put in a leave request lik ea month before I was due and get approval same as any other leave, the date was just left open.

I doubt he'd get it right away, but DH is being allowed to take his this November at Thanksgiving time (our daughter was born in February), so that may be a possibility depending on the accepting command.

All depends on command.

It is up to the command with any decision on leave. With him in AIT, it would be hard to get 10 days or any leave without having to get recycled. I had a guy in my class when I was in AIT go home for his wife when she delivered, she had alot of complications and delivered earlier than expected and he got recycled with only missing 2 days of school. Also even though you may think he has one year to use it, remember every command is different and if he gets somewhere and has training, missions to complete and a strict work schedule, he may still not get that.
