Jump for Joy My son on his records **Update in OP**

I've been told that to put my son on his "page 4" my husband needs to adopt him. Is that true?

I don't think my ex DH would agree with that.

    :update

So yesterday hubby went to the office and
My son is on his record now we only need to enroll him on Tricare

I can confirm that there are no problems to put stepchilds on the records without adopting them!

    What is Page 4?

My sons are not adopted by my dh, and they have the life insurance for dependents, Tricare, and just about any other benefits. They are his dependents. I would not get military death benefits (cash money) for them if he died, but everything else, they get. Dh did say that if he died, they WOULD still be eligible for the Tricare continuation that would happen if the member died, as long as they are dependents at the time of his death.

From what I've read, YEARS ago, they didn't allow them to receive the benefit (stepkids) unless they were adopted by the member...they changed that years ago, I'm sure due to the changing needs of today's families (a lot more blended families, etc.)

Also, if your dh adopts them, your XH not only no longer has any rights, but also no responsibilities-so there would be no child support either. IMO, taking the bio father out of the picture, absent abuse or neglect, is never a good way to go if it's possible to avoid it.

And, of course, without his permission, as long as he's been partially involved in the child's life, no court is going to order it either. Takes a lot to terminate parental rights.

What military benefits are my stepchildren entitled to?
If the military member is providing a household for step-children, or is legally obligated for their support, they are entitled to the same benefits and privileges as if they were children of the military sponsor.
    HTH!

You're welcome! FWIW, when dh and I first got together, he thought he had to adopt them, too. I had to actually pull it up, and show him in writing, before he believed me! lol

Both my dad and stepdad were active duty. When my stepdad got orders to germany we were added to his file so that we could go as well. It was really weird the way it worked, but he didnt have to adopt us.
