    Name change and benefits question

    Advertisements
I'm going to get my name changed today at the social security office. This Friday, DH and I are planning on going down to base to get me enrolled in all of the benefits, etc.

I won't have my new social security card yet, so will I still be able to sign up for them under his last name? (which will be mine once I get the card...?) I wont have any documents for the new last name by Friday... Does the social security office give you a document temporarily until you get the new card? How does that work?

As long as you have your marriage license you should be able to get your ID card and everything in your married name. The SS office didn't give me anything temporary, but I didn't go there until after I have already gotten my mil ID and stuff. You should be fine!

That's what I wanted to hear! I was paranoid that I wouldn't be able to get anything done without something having my new last name!

Ya as long as you have your marriage license you'll be fine. The SS office did give me a receipt with my new name on it which I took to the DMV the next day to get my new license.

And you haven't gotten your new one yet? Maybe they don't want you to exist.

(High Five) I went yesterday and applied for the new social security card. I got a receipt with my new name on it... I had to sign a document with my new name too. It was...weird feeling.
