    OHA Problems

    Advertisements
My husband went to the sandbox and is required to live out in town since he is an E5. The landlords require 2 months of rent up front which is $4000. PSD told my husband to take the 2 months of advanced OHA (for Dec and Jan rent) and the 3rd month he would have to pay out of pocket and then his OHA would be kicked in. Well, he got OHA ($2000) on this check and they took it right back out. So I called PSD and they said "Advanced OHA" is a loan. You have to pay the $4000 back. That is so what we were not told. Why in the world am I paying it back when it's the Navy's issue to give these guys OHA to live out in town. So now we are having to pay February's rent out of pocket and possibly March which I cannot afford. I do not understand this advanced OHA crap. And there is 2 other guys in the same command as my husband in the same position as us. Any help please.

Advance anything is always something that has to be paid back. Either paid back or their checks are reduced that amount over a period of check.

I should state this is in MY experience. I am not Navy so I can't state it is that way for certain for them

I'm sure it depends on the country/location. The base my husband last deployed to did it this way too for people over a certain rank.

I have no idea how it works, but anything you get advanced has to be paid back. We got advance OHA when we moved here to pay the deposit and first month's rent. They take a certain amount out of every paycheck to pay that back.

Oh, I see. I guess I just never heard anything but Iraq and Afghanistan called the sandbox.

DH got an OHA advancement in the past and they took it out gradually over 6 paychecks.

    Ahhhh, ok thanks.

I know I always think of Iraq or Afghanistan when someone says the sandbox, but I say the sandbox for most of the countries over there where our guys go because it is easier.
