Tricare Referrals?
Has anyone ever used a referral? My primary care manager couldn't help me so she referred me to the ob at the naval hospital. They just called and said that they weren't able to help either
(strange since I never even met with them, I just got the referral on Tues.) They were going to send my referral in to tricare. Do you know what happens next? Do I go to a civilian? How long does this process take?

your PCM is supposed to put thru the referral to Tricare and that Tricare is supposed to find you a Dr based on whatever speciality it is and they are supposed to send you a letter letting you know who you are supposed to see and give you an authorization number. i dont know why tricare said they couldnt help you , unless your PCM didnt put the referral in yet.

Sometimes they can go ahead and make your appt depending if the doc is with a group that takes tricare.

Here how they do it now is you are referred toa civilian. You wait until you get your letter from tricare with the referal. And then you call the Dr and make an appt. You will recieve statement in the mail for your visits but pay nothing. It just shows you what tricare paid and what the civlian Dr accepted

I process referrals at the office I work at and we have HUNDREDS of Tricare patients. All we do is send the information in to Tricare and they send us an authorization number with exp date and number of visits allowed and then you should get the number or a copy of the referral and then be able to make your appointment. Also if the specialists office can access humanamilitary.com they will be able to pull up the information on your referral as well. We refer patients out to civi docs all the time... not too many problems unless there is a coding error or something like that and just like with any other insurance company you can backdate things and have them corrected. HTH! Good luck!!!
