Anyone know of a good group to volunteer with?

Hola everyone! About 6-8 months ago, I tried volunteering with the USO of IL by putting in an online application. I never heard back! So 1-2 months after that, I emailed all the email addresses I could find on their website, never heard back. A month after that, someone responded saying they have orientations... eventually. About 4 months after I originally applied, they sent me dates, but I couldn't go (out of town). I asked for other dates and never heard back... So, then I did the application for Operation Homefront and also never heard back!

Has anyone had this experience before? I find it rather shocking. I work as a volunteer coordinator for an animal welfare group and one should usually respond rather quickly to the free work people are offering (if you know what I mean).

So, does anyone have any experience with other groups that are more reliable? I would really like to volunteer somewhere as it means a lot to me. I've done care packages for AnySoldier.com before and while that was fun, I'd like to do something a bit more than just packages.

    Thanks in advance!

Oh, that is an AWESOME idea. Thank you! I'm getting my second BA in Biology and this will not only fulfill my desire to volunteer with a military-based organization, but also in the health field.

You could always volunteer at the local family help center, the navy is Fleet and Family but I have no idea what the others are called. They are always looking for people to help at the front desk and they told me that when jobs become available, they look to their volunteers to fill positions before looking elsewhere.

What sort of organization/cause are you wanting to work with or for? You mentioned OH and USO - are you wanting to stick with military oriented organizations?

I don't know if there's an official organization for it or anything, but volunteering at nursing homes is amazing.

I have volunteered at a DV shelter (emergency and transitional housing style) and in the YMCA child care center. I loved both.
