American Legion - Military Activism & Advocacy

Every time I go to school, I pass by my local American Legion. They have an outdoor billboard that reads "Active Duty Welcome!"

So my question is, do you or your SO visit the American Legion?! I'm curious about what they're all about!

I have no idea what it is... maybe like a Lions Club?

LOL! I don't even really know what the Lions Club is all about.

It's something like the VFW... another place for Vets to convene.. DH is a member of the VFW, since they opened membership to OIF and OEF vets. We've only ever gone when command events were held there.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.

Ahhhhh ok! Thanks M! I don't think my husband is social enough to just walk on in...LOL!

They had a member drive outside the NEX a while back... DH signed up then.. he's not active currently, but is a member. He knows some other guys that are active, and it's all or nothing basically.. once you volunteer, you're "expected" to do your part in all of it.

My mother in law is the state president for the VFW auxillary in North Dakota. They do a lot of great things in the community.

I am a member of the American Legion Auxilary. Have been since I was 24 hours old. I love being able to hear stories from the Veterans. Both my grandparents are very active. They are trying to get my husband to join. The American Legion is my second home. All of the members at my local Post back home are my family. They've seen me grow up from being Miss Poppy, going to my Softball Games, formal dances, Prom, getting engaged and now being married. I love the companyI get from spending time with the Veterans and their families.
