I'm talking to the Student Activies President at my college later this week about forming a Military Support Organization on my campus. We don't have anything instituted here and it's something I want to do in order to get more actively involved and to get other students on this campus who might have military family/SO's/friends serving our country.
I've been doing research for the past few days about the "Yellow Ribbon America" and am debating on becoming a neighborhood coordinator- but I am wondering if any of you could give me any information from personal experience. In order for my proposal to be reviewd, I need to draw up a club constitution, cover letter, and proposed itinerary. I've been working on ways to support our troops that are easily accesible for college students, but I'm having trouble with an itinerary because I don't really know what we can do locally to get the community/campus more involved. I'm sorry if that didn't make sense..but any information you could give me about getting this started would be MUCH appreciated. It's taking on a lot because I would be club director which is going to be quite interesting with trying to balance 17 credits and a job...but I know it can be done. TIA!!!!

I just started a campus organization. If you need help you can PM me.
If you find an umbrella organization that you can affiliate with they will have a bunch of suggestions for you. They may also have a sample constitution and such for you to just edit instead of having to write it from scratch. I also suggest you put out some feelers for other students who would be interested in helping you start it up (facebook or meetup comes to mind?) Two heads are better than one. Also, look around to see what other organizations are doing. We pillaged a bunch of ideas from the campus websites of other Universities. Something we have (for my organization) done is get a list of holidays and start googling for ideas about activities for those holidays. For example, we found out Banned Book Week is this month so we are getting bookmarks printed and handing them out on campus/ in the library. Some thoughts off the top of my head: -do a card drive for xmas. Collect hand written cards to send overseas. If you are going to do that I would start in November, though. -Check your campus rules, but it may be easy to set up a themed social gathering. Like a "root beer float" night with a patriotic movie or something. If your campus allows you to do alcohol related events then check out local bars or eateries. A lot of places will give you 10% of their proceeds on drink/food sales as long as you do it on a weekday. You could raise money for a troop organization. -You could do a letter writing drive or a campus care package box any time of year. One campus organization here just had boxes all over the campus for school supplies. You could do the same for care package supplies? - Something we are thinking of doing when our club is bigger is having a "coin jar competition" -- everyone in the group picks their favorite charity and gets a jar to collect coins in. At the next meeting whoever has the most in their change jar "wins" and all the money is then donated to the charity they chose. (People tend to collect more when there is competition involved.) Anyway, word of warning: if you don't have a ton of time to dedicate to it, then I wouldn't bother. A lot of times people just want to attend meetings so they can put something on their resume and don't care about participation at all. It's like pulling teeth! You have a couple REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC people if you are lucky. The rest is dead weight.
