Military Significant Others and Spouse Support -

  1. Thank you so much for responding to my post! My husband and I have are on the fence about whether or not we want to live on base vs base. Reading over all of the housing information the only thing we DO know is that we will probably be LIVING at the navy Lodge for a considerable amount of time until we find housing. My husband will be an 02E, with dependents.
-We have heard different stories about the waiting lists, one being my hubby has to be there IN PERSON before we are put on any official list, and the other one being our sponsor can put us in the list with a POA. D you know which one is true?
-Both my kids will be going to the Elementary on base, and living off base they can still get bussed. I hear its better to live on base if you have kids but I am veering towards wanting to live off base. My biggest concern is money....I am overwhelmed at the amount of money that is needed to rent a home (like 4-5 months rent up front) I have read that we will partially be reimbursed for some of those fees but things are tight with us now before we leave the states and we may have to take out of our savings to cover this stuff and wait for reimbursement. How was renting from a landlord and living within the community? How quickly does that extra cola/dla and OHA come or reimbursement take? I will stop at that....I do not what to overwhelm you with all of these questions. Thank again for everything! My private email is jennifer

We left Atsugi about a year ago, but I'd be happy to answer your questions. We have no pets and no kids so I can't help much with those sort of questions, but I can help with other stuff. We lived off base and loved it, but I think they key is finding a house close to base, and also close to a train station (within easy walking distance). Being able to walk to the train station was so wonderful.
