I'm going to make pulled pork sandwiches - NOW w/PICS
I've saw a few good recipes on here, so I'm going to make one of those. I've never used my crock pot before, so I hope it turns out well.
Questions? 1) What sides should I have? I'm thinking about cauliflower salad, coleslaw and what else? 2) I'm having guests over for dinner around 5 tomorrow. Can I start the pulled pork tonight, on low, and take it out tomorrow morning before I put in the bbq sauce, put it in the fridge and then put in back in the crockpot +bbq sauce like an hour before the guests come? Any other tips for a first timer? ****UPDATE: Turned out delicious!! Pics in post 12**** Last edited by cllgefrk13; 09-20-2009 at 06:53 PM. |

And you absolutely MUST have coleslaw. You put it on the sandwiches like a condiment. Get the white kind. For the sides, green beans and/or baked beans, and some soft rolls (the squarish pull-apart ones). For the sandwiches, get plain burger-style buns. It's not very good with seeded buns. When I do pulled pork, I also try to have something somewhat healthy just for balance, like a small vegetable tray. With ranch for dipping. Because ranch is soooooo dang healthy.

For a side with pulled pork, I cut up red potatoes and boil them with some garlic. Then I mash them up with a little milk. Delicious. Then we do a healthier veggie like the PP suggested.
Other tips..since it's your first time using a crock pot, don't open it until it's all done cooking. It can add a lot of cooking time every time you do. If you already knew that, then ignore that part.

Be here at 5. I'm having the banana bread too!
I will have to watch myself with opening it. I do that all the time with the oven. I'm so impatient. |

Ok, another question. This is the recipe I was planning on using. It doesn't mention bbq sauce. Do I still add bbq sauce at the end, or does the mixture take the place of bbq sauce?
CROCK POT PULLED PORK 2 onions, sliced thin 2 Tbs brown sugar 1 Tbs paprika 2 tsp salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 (4-6 lb) boneless pork butt or shoulder ¾ cup cider vinegar 4 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 ½tsp crushed red pepper flakes 1 ½tsp sugar ½ tsp dry mustard ½ tsp garlic salt ¼ tsp cayenne pepper Place onions in crock-pot. Combine brown sugar, paprika, salt and pepper; rub over roast. Place roast on top of onions. Combine vinegar, Worcestershire, red pepper flakes, sugar, mustard, garlic salt and cayenne; stir to mix well. Drizzle about 1/3 of vinegar mixture over roast. Cover and refrigerate remaining vinegar mixture. Cover crock-pot; cook on low 12-14 hours. Drizzle about 1/3 of reserved vinegar mixture over roast during last ½ hour of cooking. Remove meat and onions; drain. Chop or shred meat and onions. Serve with remaining vinegar mixture. |

Most recipes with ingredients like that don't need BBQ sauce. The mixture should take care of it. I've actually never done pulled pork with already made BBQ sauce.

Thanks! I wasn't sure since I didn't see anything like ketchup or tomato paste in the recipe.

The recipe you quoted is fine as is it. That's considered "Eastern" Carolina BBQ, or "White"BBQ (as in, it stays white, not red like it gets w/bbq sauce). It's good just like it is, and it's even better with cole slaw slapped on top right there in the sammich.
