Marriage & Relocation question
Hi...I'm currently engaged to a sailor and we are trying to figure out how the Navy works with marriage and everything. I want to move to where he is stationed right after we're married and everything, but he said it could take up to a year for the Navy to recognize it or something? Is this true? I'm not worried about moving expenses or anything, but I was hoping the Navy would recognize me as a dependent so I can continue my education with in-state tuition. I know this is complicated, but I can't stand being apart too much longer. Anyone with experience in these matters please help!

We got married after DH had already gotten his orders so they did not pay for me to move to FL from VA...It did not take long at all for me to be on his insurance or anything..He went and put me on his page 2 (I tihnk it took about a month or so for the insurance to be activated) then I think it took a month for the money to increase becuase he had a dependant now. It took a bit longer for my Id becuase I had to wait till I was in FL with him to get it becuase I needed him with me in order to get it (or atleast that is what a few people told me whenever I went to the bases to try to get it) I am not sure how the moving will affect your in state tuition..I would think that you would NOT be considered a state resident until you have been there for a year so if you go to college or wherever in whatever state he is in I would think you would have to pay the extra money that are for non locals but dont quote me on that. Good luck!

they won't help with the moving....but the navy recognized me as a dependent within a week of my moving here. so don't worry, it won't take a year for that! he just has to put your information on some form and then you go get a military id. it works fairly quickly. he can have the form filled out a few days before you move there so all you have to do is bring your SS card & id and snap a picture! good luck!
also we thought the insurance took a month, but it didn't. i didn't get a card or anything but i told the pharmacy and they look up his SS# and it worked right away. the BAH takes a month to kick in. i would call the university to check about residency. i don't see why you'd have to wait a year if you could present a lease agreement or something. |

Thanks for the answer. Hmm..maybe I am misinformed? I heard all sorts of horror stories like you have to be 'screened' and examined and tested before you get insured, just in case you go overseas for a Permananet assignment with them? For now I think we will be staying in the US for a while....

you have to get an overseas screening IF you get overseas orders, but it is a basic physical and any shots needed for the area.
I live overseas, so I know all about that. It's not that bad.....
