I would mail everything I could the cheapest possible way and then just try and shove everything else in my car. When I moved out to CA from IN I used the ziplock space saver bags for anything soft (clothes, bedding, handbags, etc.) and then I bought a roof bag to put on top of my car since my Honda Civic did not have a roof rack. The bag was pretty low profile and worked great. I couldn't really pack much in the car because my 60lb collie had the back seat and then my Dad and I were up front.
