Where is the build-up? Is it inside or outside? Is it near the working parts or merely on the "shell"? What consistency is the build-up - is it just a film or is it a chunkier/thick layer?

depending on your circumstances, and whether it is feasable for you, put in the back of a pickup truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and pressure wash it. Before you go there though, spray it with dawn or Greased Lightning (home depot, restaurant supply stores).
or outside the house with a house and pressure nozzle, etc. However, the hot water from a car wash or pressure washer is best.

It is only on the sides of the sides of exterior. One side is worse than the other due to being it was the side facing the stove. The side that is worse is thick and in spots chunky. The other side is a thin slimy layer.

I would clean off as much as you can using straight vinegar or using very hot water and the blue Dawn dish soap. (The blue Dawn is amazing at getting grease off)

If after using one of those you still have stubborn residue, mix together equal parts of vinegar and the liquid type dishwasher detergent (the kind you put in a dishwasher). It doesn't really matter what dishwasher detergent, I get what ever kind is on sale and I have coupons for. Use and old washcloth dipped in the soap vinegar mixture and rub it in circles into the stuck on grime.
