Whats the best way to clean out ash from a fireplace? Just dust-pan and brush it? Someone I know said to hoover it, but I dunno if that's ok.

Yes dust pan and brush. Vacuum will stir it up in the air and cover your floor/furniture etc..

Vacuuming it will make your vac smell like smoke for the rest of it's life. Everytime you run the vac from then on, it will make your house smell like a fireplace.

sounds like too much hard work, i just pay a man to come and do it

he curtains the fireplace opening and does the entire fireplace and im shocked by how much soot there was on the walls off chimney and he cleans up completely so there is zero mess

i have a dyson vacuum so i dont want to ruin it with ash & soot

We usually scoop it up and put it in a trash bag and vacuum the left overs.
