Pantry/Homemade meals
When Brackston comes home, i really want to begin making all meals from scratch, and doing more variety.
i tend to buy enough for the 2weeks between pay periods. but i would like to start stocking up on stuff on sale, and figuring out good staples to always have on hand. Any ideas? What kind of homemade meals do you make reguarly for your family? |

My staples have changed recently but here's what I always have on hand now:
Corn Tortillas Colby Jack cheese Monty Jack cheese Chicken Chunks (canned) Chicken and rice soup Crackers Canned fruit and veggies (mostly green beans, corn, peaches, pairs, pineapple) Applesauce Rice. Lots of rice. Cereal (sometimes cereal for dinner is amazing) Egg Beaters (frozen in cartons with one always in the fridge defrosted) Bacon (I buy a 3lb bag of it from Sams, cut it across and down and then freeze the 4-6 sections of it into portions so that I can use it to wrap around meat, or just to add flavor to something without having to cook a whole lb of it) 5lb bags of frozen veggies Frozen meat (chicken breasts and ground turkey, bought in bulk and portioned before freezing) TONS of spices. I buy them in big containers from Sams Club and I used to get a spice every paycheck but now I have everything we'd ever use. The normal sugar, brown sugar, flours (now gluten free) are always on hand I always have butter and margarine on hand 30 minute Lawry's marinades (herb and garlic is yum!) Various fresh fruits in the fridge Slim Fast (for when I need to eat but don't wanna) Bell peppers (bought in bulk, sliced, portioned and frozen) Chipotle seasoning packets for the oh so loved chipotle chicken That's pretty much it and I make tons of different things from all that. I used to have a ton of the basic soups but have cleared them out since having to go gluten free. |

I always have these on hand:
Bread crumbs Liquid Marinades BBQ Sauce Rice Carrots, celery, bell pepper & onions beans pasta & sauce powder seasoning packets white wine variety of fruits chicken, ground turkey or hamburger, steak or stew meat chedder, jack & parm cheese smoked sausage & frozen shrimp gumbo base You can make meatloaf or pasta with the pasta sauce or even pour it over chicken. The liquid seasoning go great on any meat and you can toss in oven or grill it. Bread crumbs are great for meatloaf or breaded meats. Hamburger can be used for any of the above or stuffed bell peppers, enchiladas, tacos, etc. Seasoning packets are awesome and their are instructions to prepare a meal...I like strogonauf(sp?), taco, sweedish meatballs, tomate and basil, zesty herb, baja citris, pork or chicken with the cooking bag..I love those things lol. Beans are great slow cooked with smoked turkey or sausage. I also always keep a boxed gumbo base in case i don't feel like making it from scratch (which is often.haha) and toss in the chicken, smoked sausage and shrimp over rice. I love love love love gumbo! |
