Vehicle registration in another state?

I wasn't sure where to put this but I hope the Homemakers forum is okay.

I am a CA resident and DH is a TX resident. I think we are going to buy my car back from my parents and take it to Italy with us so that we don't have to get a loan and purchase another car when we get there.

My question is if it would benefit me at all to register the vehicle in TX, or if I even can. I know CA is raising their licensing and registration fees soon. That's what my parents said at least. But I'm unsure about TX. We'll more than likely be moving from Italy to TX since that is where we are planning to call home.

If I have a CA DL, could I even register my car in TX without getting a TX license?

I believe you can. I have a CT license and I have registered a car in VA and Maine with no issues but I would call TX DMV Just to be sure since every state is different

I have an Alabama license and Texas registration and I didn't have any problems. I'd definitely call the TX DMV though to make sure.

I would think the car would need to be in his name, since he is the resident, but I don't see why not.

I would agree with the other ladies call the TX DMV, here is the number if you need it(512) 465-7611. If yall arent in Texas it may be a little harder. hope this helps

yup you can do it!

both of our cars (my old one) arkansas plates and ga insurance and we were residents of ga, when we got my new car we did ga plates but when they expire on dh's bday we will be getting ar plates.

also you know if your dh is paying property tax he can get that waived since he is military... (you can in AR atleast...)

California registration fees will double on April 1st and sales tax goes up by 1 percent. I think as long as you do not have your car registration, insurance and DL all in three different states you are okay.

In most States the rule with that is it has to be only registered in the military members name. Here in Kittery Maine it waives the State Tax but not the city tax (which thankfully is a one time deal)

Thanks ladies! I appreciate all of the feedback and information. I'll check out the link and probably call tomorrow.

One last question based on flangl18's response: If we have auto insurance through USAA, can we base it off of his HOR in TX? That would put just my DL in CA and our insurance and registration in TX. My DH's name is also going to be on the registration and the title of the car.

i think you can register your car pretty much anywhere without changing your license. i've done it in two states (CA and FL) while i still have an IL driver's license.
