How much does your BAH cover?

    Advertisements
DH and I are looking for a house to rent in our new location in Texas. At our last duty station, we found a great place below BAH so that our BAH covered rent, as well as most of our utilities. In our new location, so far we haven't found properties to do that with. The places that are really nice are almost at our BAH rate. We have the funds to cover the extra for utilities, so its not the issue of money that is the problem.

I just don't know what is common practice and would like some insight from you all as to how you use BAH. Is it just for rent? or rent + utilities?

DH is out of the army now, but we were able to pay rent + some utilities at our place in North Pole. I think it will vary from time to time. Just depends on what you find to rent, and what's included with the rent.

Ours in our current house is Rent and utilities which works out to be about 600 dollars a month.

When we move into our own home in a few weeks [hopefully], BAH is around 1100 or so. It will take all of that but we're still under.

okay, well what you've got left over is what our BAH is... LOL

The problem is that we're not in a military town in our new place. We're in a college town. So rent is crazy and tied to the college season cycle.

We have three college's in our main town. We chose to move about 10 minutes south, so 15ish from the base/school for each of us.

Plus it also helps that we have a mortgage payment in the second home, not rent.

In 2012 it covered our rent and utilities with about $100 out of pocket each month. Now with the increase for 2013 it covers all of it with about $20 left over.

Our BAH covers only our mortgage payment. But with it going up, it will now cover our BAH & probably our electric bill.
