Stay in housing or Rent an apartment?

    Advertisements
So right now we're in housing, and we went from living in a high cost of living area with BAH to a low cost of living area with no BAH and the pay cut was extreme! We weren't prepared for it, and me finding a job in this new place is becoming a problem. So I just wanted to know everyone's opinion on whether we should stay in housing cause we're better off either way, or move into an affordable apartment and receive BAH? I know its not going to be a huge difference but any more we can get will definitely help at this point.

Can you get an apartment big enough for your needs that meets all your criteria and doesn't exceed BAH with any utilities?

That is exactly what I was thinking!

And to Loving, I definitely will try my hardest to meet my needs, I wouldn't need anything big, its just me, DH, and our puppy.

Oh, I just asked because different areas can be more difficult to find housing that meets your needs within the BAH, and if you have to add utilities sometimes you are better off in housing, from a financial standpoint. It really depends on where you are looking though. Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you will be able to pocket some money every month after rent, utilities, and the rest of your bills, then move out in town and collect BAH. If you aren't able to find a place cheap enough that you will be able to pocket some extra cash, stay where you are.

We went now but are regretting in because San Diego is insanely expensive. When we lived in VA though we lived in a two bedroom to bath town home that was fairly nice way less then the BAH so we got to hold onto a good part of the BAH. We did not live near base though it was like a 30 minute drive in Hampton. (although I'd never ever live in Hampton again it was nice being able to save some money.)

Don't forget to add in the cost of gas if the place you are thinking of renting means a longer commute to work. Sometimes paying for gas eats up all the BAH savings.

If the house on base is good I would stay on base where you know you will always have rent covered.

If you move off base and like you said BAH is low what happens if rent gets raised before your lease is up, or your utilities are too much in addition to rent etc?

I would only move off base if I knew for a fact I would never have to worry about rent and utilities.

I agree...we've always done it, and most of dh's duty stations we've banked.
