Turning the heat on?
So i came home today after being gone overnight and my apartment was 61 degrees
, so i turned the heat on. This place is brand new, they were just finished in July, so im guessing the heat has never been turned on before. Well, about a minute after i turn the heat on, my fire alarm starts going off and i notice a funky smell coming out of where the heat comes from. I turned it off right away, but now im freezing. Should i turn the heat back on and let it run for a while, maybe to get some kinks out? Is my heater defective and going to light my place on fire?!?!

Yikes, I'm not really sure. It could just be dust or pet hair or something, but I'd be scared to take that chance. I'd call your landlord asap. Good luck!

sounds like what happens here every year. When I finally turn the heat on, it will smell all funky because of the dust and pet hair that is on the burner. I am holding off turning mine on until I actuall need it. (its 59 in the house right now). Yesterday, I walked into a convenient store by my house and the owner was freaking out. I mentioned that he must have just turned on the heat for the first time this year and he seemed relieved when I told him it was normal and the smell would go away when the dust burned off.

To be safe, call your landlord and make sure that everything is in working order! Hopefully it's not anything serious!
