Am I crazy for wanting to buy?
So, my husband leaves in just a few weeks and he will be gone for a few months -- he won't be back until 2010. We recently found out that we will be here at Fort Lewis for at least 3 more years, with the option to stay longer than that if we want to.
We are currently renting a large home, and it's okay. But, we are spending quite a bit on rent, even though we have more than enough BAH to cover it and our utilities, too. Anyway, my husband is leaving, but I want to buy a house. I want to put all this money into something that is ours, especially since we will be here for a while. Also, I want one now because I would like to get in on the rebate before they no longer offer it after December 1st. If I were to buy now, I would buy one alone. My husband would of course say no, but not because he won't be here. He is just scared of spending a lot of money, and it freaks him out. But, I can handle him. I just wonder, am I crazy for wanting to do this without him, or even at all? I am intimidated I guess.

I mean, I think you two should agree on it, but no I don't think the idea is crazy. I would just make sure that your lender will allow you to rent it out just incase you do have to move and can't get it sold. If we weren't moving to a place where houses are outrageous, we'd be thinking about buying too. Houses *can* still be a great investment. You just have to change up the strategy from what it was a few years ago.

I think it makes a lot of sense, especially since it's a return on your BAH and a good time to buy especially if you're a first time buyer.
As for him being gone, I'm sure you have friends that would help you with the move.

Most importantly, though, buying a house right now - if there is ANY possibility of having to sell it - is NOT a good idea. You will most likely not be able to sell it and then what will you do?
