And now I need some super cheap fabric to practice on. I have some felt laying around, can I use that just to practice stitching till a fabric order gets in?

Felt will feel REALLY different than most of the fabrics you'll use for clothing, but you could definitely use it to get the feel of your machine! How exciting! When I got my newest machine I wanted to sew everything in my house for like three months. Washcloth? Let's sew that to something! Teddy bear? I'm sure the kids won't mind if I sew its feet to its head, right?

    for you!!

I've had my new craft table for my just bought sewing machine since October I couldn't decide on a machine, just decided to go simpler then I really wanted to and get a uk spec so no transformer. I'll upgrade when we move back home
    I'm excited.

Felt should be fine to practice on except that felt is stiffer than most fabrics so practicing on that will be different than on a cotton blend fabric. If you have any old, ratty t-shirts, those would be closer to the fabric that you'd more than likely be using.

T-shirts will require a different needle than woven fabrics. You probably want to get an assortment of needles because the needle needs to match the fabric being used.

If you have old bed sheets, they make great practice fabric!

Forgot about that, also, make sure you get a heavy duty needle for uniform fabric because if your DH is like mine, he'll be wanting you to do all of the alterations from now on
