Cricut Question

Hey Ladies,
Does anyone know if I MUST have the Cricut Design Studio in order to string letters together or is there a way to do this on the machine itself? I have the expression.

If that was confusing basically I'm trying to write a word

like this - Onion vs. O n i o n

I have to ask you how do you like the Cricut? I've seen the commercials on tv and I keep getting interested in buying one.

I like it ok... I am getting frustrated that it seems like for what I want to do with it I'll need to purchase the design studio which is just another expense on top of an already pricey machine.

I'm sure I'll love it even more than I do once I get used to it a little more! I think it's just overwhelmed me and frustrated me that I sat down tonight, finally to do something for myself and now I can't figure out how to do it.

Ya... I figured that out. Luckily I have a friend who had a copy of SCAL she isn't using so we traded some stuff for it and it worked like a charm last night!
