    Happy Autumn!

    Happy Autumn Everyone!!!

And if you happen to acknowledge the WotY, may you have a blessed Mabon!

Autumn is easily my favorite season now that I live in the South with little chance of snow. So I'm all anticipating the brisk mornings and the return of my favorite wardrobe pieces!!!

Happy Autumn, as well! I love Autumn, especially in Europe where it gets cold and you can smell the fresh burned wood in the air. It still feels like hot and humid summer where am at, right now. Boo!

It's just about 80 degrees at my house. So, ya...no Fall weather going on here!

A quote from Saturday on NOAA's Space Weather Prediction page on Facebook :

Today is the Autumnal Equinox! The day and night will be approximately the same length; then we begin our journey into Fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The equinoxes play a role in space weather, too.

Around the autumnal equinox, coronal holes with positive polarity are more geoeffective; they link-up with our magnetic field more efficiently. This results in slightly more geomagnetic activity than typically seen from them during other times of the year.

The situation is reversed around the spring equinox, and negative polarity holes bring a bit more activity. This relationship is named for the scientists who discovered it in 1973. It's called the Russell-McPherron effect. You can read the original paper at http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/public/rmcp...i001p00092.pdf

As our planet revolves around the sun, and the Sun and Earth rotate on their axes, a complex dance of magnetic fields takes place. This dance is further complicated by coronal mass ejections that clobber our magnetosphere, by recurrent coronal holes that tickle it, and by the reversal of the sun's magnetic field during the course of a solar cycle.

Our job as forecasters is to untangle the mystery, then to predict the effects on our environment and our civilization. It is an easy job to love.
Always cool to learn something new!
