I think that sex is a desire. I could live my whole life without having sex, and it would not effect me whatsoever. The only reason I have ever had sex is because I had the desire to do so. There is not explainable reason why someone would "need" to have sex, other than to have children, but there is no need to do that, either.

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs for what motivates the human mind to self-actualization and happiness, sex is listed as one of the basic needs. Along with: water, shelter and food.
