I've knitted legwarmers for babies, people like them because they keep their legs warm and you till have easy diaper access.
Dunno if that's what you are taking about.

Wool is always expensive. The material is expensive and then you're paying for someone to knit it too. Usually a WAHM. I just got my first pair... A cheap alternative is fleece.

Wool works as a diaper cover (when it is properly lanolized) because not only does it absorb liquids, but it also evaporates liquids so the wool never feels wet (unless you leave your kid in it for hours or something of course)
I didn't get it either so I avoided wool for awhile... but then I got a cheap ass wool cover and fell in love. It works AMAZINGLY well. my cheap ass cover is falling apart now but it still works great as a cover for ALL NIGHT with no leaks. Longies are the pants, shorties the shorts and skirties the skirts obviously... they are expensive because good quality wool isn't cheap plus they are usually hand dyed at home by someone and then hand knit. You are paying for the wool, the dye, and the sweat and time put into making the product. You are also paying for the quality... they last and last (unless you get a cheap ass cover like me ) You can also get wool soakers (looks like underwear or the same shape as any other cover) which works great under regular clothes and pajamas.DEFINITELY worth the price in my opinion... I just can't afford anything other than my cac currently I'm trying to sell **** so I CAN buy some longies.. I want them for bedtime! my lust for them is immense

i knew you would be able to answer. i still a little lost as the diaper cover thing. but i don't think i will ever understand that. i understand what you are saying, but i can't imagine it actually working like that. i imagine soaked wool pants that smell like pee leaving a dripping trail all over. if i ever convince DH to do cloth i will learn to knit again and make some to try out. i KNOW dh would never let me spend that much on them. cause he's cheap

Let me break down the price for you.
I have this yarn that I'm knitting for a customer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/2799985...57622576435799 It will cost her $100 dollars for a set from me. It cost me 50 dollars with shipping. The dyer had to pay around 25-30 dollars for the yarn plus shipping to her. Then she took the time to dye it all by hand. After the cost of supplies and her time, we are at the price I paid for the yarn. My customer wants a pair of small longies and a hat. I'm asking 45 for my knitting time. I'll spend around 12-15 hours knitting this set for her. At the end of all this, I'll be making 3 bucks an hour max. With the shipping to my customer, we are now at the 100 dollars I mentioned. But as you can see, all the WAHMs along the way aren't even making minimum wage. In the end..it's a great deal if you want to support handmade and want high quality products. However, you can get longies for cheaper. I offer YYMNs (your yarn my needles) just like almost every other knitting WAHM and you can supply whatever type of yarn you want. Purewool is really cheap...especially if you can get it in a co-op. Solid Cestari is pretty cheap too and it's an amazing quality yarn that will last for a very long time. Some WAHMs have cheaper yarns on hand already just for customers that afford "hyena" quality yarn (I don't yet...I need to find a co-op soon for them). You can also do fleece or recycled wool. There are some GORGEOUS stores out there that make those kinds of covers and they have very reasonable prices.
