    Filing taxes question?

    Advertisements
First all, sorry if this has already been asked a million times

DH will be at boot camp before we file our taxes. My question is, do I need power of attorney to sign for him and all that? We file jointly. And if I do need power of attorney, does any one know where I can go to get it/if it costs anything and how much?

    Thanks!

Yes, you need a PoA to sign for him. He needs to get it for you. It doesn't cost anything.

ETA: Sorry, you should need a PoA. DH forgot to get me one when he was in Afghan & I had to go through loops & hoops to file but I was able to. They had me sign my name for him & write that he was deployed above each one. So it depends who you deal with & if they'll make the exception.

He needs to go to the JAG office & fill out a form.

I added an ETA to my PP.

If you efile using a home program like Turbo Tax you can file without having a POA, if you paper file, or go to a place like H&R block you will need a POA.
Despite that, you should get a POA anyway just in case, for reasons other than just for filing taxes.

My husband filed while on deployment and he files for both of us. He doesn't have a POA for me.

My question ended up being irrelevant, all our W-2's came in the mail today. We have everything we need now, so we can file before he leaves. woo!

For anyone else with the same issue, the IRS has a form you can use.
