What does this mean? Shareholder question.

So my mom owns a children s store and my sister and I are share holders on that..I never really knew what it meant so I didnt really care, I just assume that we would take over her businesses if she passed away. Well today she calls me all excited saying that my sister and I are now shareholders on a 2 million dollar farm because we are shareholders to her LLC company?.. She said we should expect to get checks in a year.?

Does anyone who what that even means? My moms ex husband is the one who set it up (long weird story, hes like my dad) and I dont even think she understands what is going on.

What exactly does being a share holder mean? I am so lost

A shareholder means you are owner of part of the company.

Like in stocks, if you own one share of stock thats worth $400, you own $400 of that company.

Sounds like a wait and see kind of thing. Its sounds like a farm was sold, and your name was on as partial shareholder originally.

Or that a for-profit farm was purchased under the umbrella of her LLC, and you'll begin getting dividends.

That too. Forgot that it could be that situation too.

It will most likely complicate your taxes, too.
