    Tax Question

    Advertisements
*Please feel free to change this thread to a different area- I wasn't sure where to put it.

I am in the process of changing my last name. I recently quit my job and moved with my husband. Do I need to contact my old job's HR department to have my named changed for my W-2? Can it stay my maiden name or does it need to change to my new last name?
I didn't know if this will cause any problems for the IRS for taxes.
    Thank you!

I bet you could, especially if you need to give them an updated address. I didn't because the company went out of business, so when I brought in my w2s with two different names on it, the accountant didn't even blink. He said because I had already changed my name with social security and everything is attached to my SSN, I would be fine. And he was right, I had no issues!

You don't have to, I filed with DH when we first got married using W-2s with my maiden name on them.

Yup you dont have to change it with them. I quit my job and moved 6 months after I got married and when tax time came on the tax form it asked if I went by any other names and I put my maiden name in that spot since my W2 didnt make my new legal name.

It will still have you SSN on it, so they will know it is for you. You should be fine.

Thank you! I totally forgot that your SSN is linked to both names. I do need to give them my address change though....
