So how does this work exactly... would I get more money back if I filed jointly? I just got married in September.

I've always filed jointly because I'm a UK citizen, for my immigration I had to show everything was done as a couple.
I've never thought about filing separately. Still, I'm about to incorporate my business so that's going to throw a huge spanner in the works! CPA here I come! |

I know that also with our upcoming son that it may make sense to file jointly as well. I am kinda hoping he's a December baby and not a January.

you get more tax credits if you filed jointly, plus you claim 2 on your taxes so more money off your taxable income

If in doubt, try it both ways. I always tell everyone this. If an event happened in the year (birth, marriage) it is treated like it happened all year!
