Lending your voice

to something without one or someone other than yourself? Do you do it?



For example:

Pro-Lifers picket and give a voice to a fetus
Environmentalists do things to give a voice to rivers, bays, oceans, trees, etc
Animal Activists give a voice to animals
Straight supporters lend their voice to the gay minority

etc.

Do you do any of these and more? In what way do you lend your voice?

I do:

I lend it to women for reproductive rights, and domestic violence.

To minorities such as homosexuals who often don't have a voice.

To children for abuse, neglect, education and so many other things that they are often unaware of decisions being made.

I lend mine to cancer patients by raising money, writing to my elected officials, testifying on pertinent legislation, and more.

I lend my voice to homosexuals by writing to my elected officials and explaining my beliefs to others and this session I hope to lend it in a protest.

I lend it to people with special needs by spreading information about the offensive nature of the world "retard" and helping them reclaim their diagnosis. By cheering on my sister and her friends at their sporting events. By writing to legislators in support of more funding for respite and other programs.

I lend my voice to people with mental illness. I work with hospitals and my college to help educate families and the community w/honest information and help eliminate stereotypes often associated with mental illness.

Healthcare - I do every HC thing there is in my area. I write all my congresspeople basically every time I think of something they need to know. I've done phone banks and door knocking. I would honestly do anything else that was asked of me, but its not like there is an organization. Just a few progressive organizations in town that have taken on the cause.

Arthritis- I work with the arthritis foundation on the parents board to raise awareness about the disease and particularly to inform people that it affects children, which many people are unaware of. Also participate in fundraising stuff.

^those things are basically both for my daughter.

I also volunteer for the ASPCA, I intern for Planned Parenthood and I have started a Secular group on campus to raise awareness of anti- intellectualism and do random service to the community to show that atheists aren't evil people. I've also done some stuff for the gay community/AIDS awareness, but that is something that is more about attending events and stuff.

But at the heart of it, anything I lend my voice to is going to be something I care about passionately... and therefore for me. I don't see how it could be any other way.

I mostly lend my voice to the poor and minorities (includes gays and women). That includes them voting, having health care, having access to those things that all of us with resources have access to.

Yes, I was a volunteer for Acorn for years. I will be sad to see them go, everyone I worked with was quality with an amazing heart.

I love this thread- it's great learning what people are passionate about! I also am involved with the above. I was on the Relay for Life committee at UNO and it raised over $21,000! I work with individuals with special needs and have pledged to "spread the word to END the word" regarding the word "retard" because I have seen how offensive and hurtful it is.
