Strength and weakness of our government

Our teacher assigned us to write a few paragraphs on what we feel is a strength and weakness of how our government is formed and run (not political-tid bits, but things like "checks and balances" and the Voting-system, etc)

Well, I think that a strenght of how our government is run is the "stepping stone" abilities of our multi-tiered government.
We have Local, county, state seats of governnment and often our national-powers (president, members of senate) use these sub-levels of government to gain experience and develope their diretion and focus on politics.

Anyone can get into politics and start from the bottom up this way - anyone - and that's definitely a strenght that not many other countries can claim.

A weakness is it's disorganization when it comes to implementing and regulating very important things such as the voting process. That, according ot the Constitution, is delegated to the states and the federal government as a concurrent power - yet, there are some aspects that seem to work against the genius of the idea like what happened in the previous election in Florida - such mishaps should never happen. In this sense, I think that, though it's a concurrent power (meaning it's a shared power between state and federal levels of government) the federal government should be able to regulate a few more details of it to make it more fair and balanced in how it's done - yet doing so without taking away the powers or individuality of the sub-levels of government.

This was our discussion last week, actually, when going over the colonists view's at the time of the Articles of the confedertaion - post Revolutionary war and Pre US Constitution.

I miss debates, though - in my class it's very stringent and surgical .. .very "classy" but I miss a good knockdown every now and then.

My history classes always turned into debates. Too bad it was usually only one or two conservatives...

I think we are weak in the running of economics. It's crazy and makes no sense at all to me.

It's a strong system overall, look how young the US is comparatively. Must be doing something right.

Capitalism is a huge weak-point for us. It just breeds selfishness and materialism which isn't any way to successfully have a country run.

That's really all I feel like getting into at the moment because my tummy hurts

Strengths:

Our freedoms, our society in general (i.e. tha ability for many different people to live together peacefully)

Weaknesses:

Our Debt, the dollar, and the inability of government to come up with a responsible solution to problems. Their solutions so far have been, Lets just throw money at it we dont have... People now wonder why things are expensive, that high pitched sound you hear is the US dollar nose diving because of it.
