S/O of palin's daughter drinking...kind of...

As a parent, if you found out your teenager committed a crime against another person (robbery, assault, etc) would you get them to turn themself in, or turn them in yourself, to the police, or would you hope they didn't get caught and not turn them in?

(from the Palin issue of her daughter drinking under age, and her being all for law and order.)

Damn straight they would get turned in. Whether I had to do it or if they did it. My children will know there are consequences for ALL of their actions.

ETA: if they get into a fight, I would have to take into consideration the severity of the fight.

if ym child commits a crime either they would turn themselves in or i would it is NOT ok to think you can get away with **** because you have "cool parents" i had people like that i went to high school with

I would encourage my child to turn themselves in (and go with them when they did) and, failing that, would turn them in myself. I would do this BECAUSE I love my child.

Now, if the crime in question was one that hurt no one but my child(drinking underage being a great example)I would relish thinking of a punishment to administer myself, the community service would seem like a picnic in comparison I think punishment should fit the crime, so that would be a fun one to think up....

You stole the words right out of my mouth! With anything serious they would be turned it no question. If it is something much more minor- drinking, DUI, MINOR shoplifting (like under $5), etc. then I think I could provide a much better life lesson without hurting their future as much as a criminal charge would.

Yup, that is why I was specific about it being crimes against another. I believe that most crimes like drinking under age, smoking pot, etc, are victimless and should be dealt with by the parents.

I have to be honest, I can't really say without being in the situation. I mean, I'd like to say "Of course I'd turn them in." because I know that's the right thing to do and most likely the best for my child. But I can't promise that is how I'll feel if the situation arose. That's a really really tough question, especially since our first baby is still cooking. Get back to me in about 13 years or so and I might have a better answer.
