McCain didn't like his country either
Michelle Obama's statement several weeks ago about "...for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country...." sent the nation into an uproar. She got riddled with all kinds of mean comments and horrible press coverage saying she's not patriotic, she hates this country, and so on. She spent the better part of the next few weeks explaining and defending her statement, and she's still having to defend it today.
BUT...... About 5 days ago, John McCain said this: "I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company." How is that so different from "For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback." ? Story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19599749/, click on Media Giving McCain a Free Pass The statements really aren't that different, but McCain has been given a free pass, while Michelle Obama has been raked over the coals. What gives?

Hm. I guess because what he said was construed as appreciation...and how you truly don't appreciate what you have until you lose it? I'm just assuming here.
I, personally, didn't take what Michelle Obama said in an ugly way either though. But that's me. I TRY to focus on what people are trying to get across and not how it comes across. Does that even make sense? LOL! It is interesting that what he said didn't get people all riled up though. You raise a very valid question. Let the debate begin!!!

I wasn't offended by McCain's statement because it implied that he didn't really APPRECIATE it until he had to be away. I WAS offended by Michelle Obama's statement because her husband is running for president. I'm sorry but I just feel like if your going to lead our country (or at least be the first lady) you should have a great deal of pride for it.

All I can say is there is a difference between being proud of something and loving something. You can love something and not be proud. So I don't see a problem with what Michelle Obama said.
McCain actually said that he didn't love the country until he was away from it. So he actually said he didn't love/appreciate his country at one point in time. That's a spoiled point of view, imo. |

I guess the way I see it is McCain maybe felt obligated to love his country, being a military brat and maybe didn't love it so much because it was a country that took his dad away from him so much... maybe a lot of resentment, KWIM? Then, when he was in the Hanoi Hilton, he realized that he did love his country and decided to do what it took to come back to that beloved country with honor. Just my gut feeling on this...

My biggest question on this is, why did Michelle Obama's statement get SOOOOO much press (to the point where people commented on it after only having heard the media's sound-bites rather than the whole context), but McCain's statement didn't seem to make much news anywhere?
Why the difference in how it was handled in and by the media? And why the emphasis on what the spouse of a candidate is saying, and no emphasis on what a candidate themself is saying? I just don't get the difference in coverage.
