My take on Obama - not to tj Sara's thread...
I started this as a reply to Sara's thread about the Obamas and their patriotism...then I realized it had a pretty good chance to take the thread completely off course - so I'm starting one of my own.
Can I just say that I don't believe Michelle Obama was saying "For the first time in my adult life I am proud to be an American." I don't believe she was saying that at all. What I gathered from the entire section of the speech was that she is proud to see that so many people are ready for change. People are coming together in unity, and hope is alive. Is that so horrible? I consider myself to be patriotic. I support my troops, I am proud to be a United States military wife. But I have to say - in the wake of the last 4 (8) years, I am truly ready for a change. I am not saying I'm going to vote for Obama. I'm not saying I'm going to vote for Clinton (but I will say that I am NOT going to vote for Clinton). I'm not saying I'm going to vote for McCain - though I do admire him a great deal. I don't know WHO I'm going to vote for (but I know it won't be Jon Stewart, sorry Trina). Every election is the same. There is mud slinging and there are speeches taken out of context. But you know - if you always do what you've always done you'll always get what you've always gotten. Change is not always easy, but it is healthy...and sometimes you could even say that change is good. In my personal opinion, I truly believe that now is one of those times.

encore!I will say myself when an election year comes up I always wipe the slate clean, I research on the candidates, and who ever I fit best with (issues-wise) is who I usually end up voting for. I absolutely agree though that we need change, it's been a long time comin' |

) and I gotta say, it is SO REFRESHING to see someone else feels the same way I do. I am SO SICK of living in fear... fear of terrorism, fear of my own government, fear of what will happen in the future. We need change in a BIG way. We need HOPE in a big way. Otherwise, there is nowhere to go but down. I think we are at a HUGE turning point in our history. There are those people out there that refuse to believe that we have ever done anything wrong as a country, who refuse to recognize that the United States is not blameless in the world... but most of us can see now that our bad choices as a country are catching up with us in a very substantial way now. While it frustrates me that we are left to clean up the messes of past (and current) administrations, I will give Bush one thing... He has done an amazing job of uniting our country and getting people to pay some ****ing ATTENTION. Of course, it's not so great for him (or the Republicans at this point) that people are uniting against HIM, but unity is something we have been seriously lacking for decades. At this point, ANYONE who actually seeks to unite the nation through hope instead of fear is the kind of candidate we need. That is why Obama is doing so well. Even if he isn't elected, he has spread an important message. And hopefully that message will resonate... We are not Republicans and Democrats first... We are AMERICANS.

Post why you think so, please. Because I honestly don't see anything different from the regular fear mongering and divisive partisan bologna from him anymore... and I LOVED McCain until a few years ago. I grew up in AZ and always had a soft spot and a lot of respect for him. I would love to be okay with him being President even if I don't vote for him myself, since he obviously does have a real chance of being the next President. I am just finding it REALLY hard to get to that point.

....I mean good lord if we have to go off what every one sentence we didnt like a candidate or their spouses have said I believe we would all be and not vote for any damn body. Democrats are going to nick pick about Republicans and Republicans are going to nick pick about Democrats....I can't wait till Mccain wife says something "unpatriotic". The people that are mad at Michelles' sentence will be defending Mrs. Mccain ass like a dog does a bone.

I just think there is a difference between being ready for change and being proud of America. That being said- I don't totally agree with the whole "ready for a change" thing. Yes, something needs to be done about healthcare, and something needs to be done about govt. spending, and immigration, and fairer taxes, etc etc.... But look at all the GOOD things this country does have! We have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, women are pretty much just as capable of having any job a man can! Things could be SOOO much worse!!! Like I said in the other post- this country is called the melting pot for a reason. People leave there countries where they aren't treated fairly to come to our great nation!! That must mean this country is doing something right!! (I'm by no means trying to start an argument here...I'm just really frickin' proud of this country!)
