    Get me ready for Deployment

    Advertisements
I have some time to get ready before my boyfriend deploys, but I am clueless, so I figured I'd start to ask the questions now!

DB and I will not be married before he deploys. We do live together and he pays for some of the bills. I'll have to maintain the bills/apartment/his truck, while he is gone using his monay.

We are about to make an appointment with legal on his base to get POA's in place.
Should I have him put my name on accounts, or not necessary since I'll have POA's?
I guess I should get all our bills account info/login info/his banking info?

DB is also clueless, this will be the first deployment where he has someone else in his life

Tell me all the things, experienced people!! Check-list's are welcome

I don't know the legal/lawyer stuff but here are the other important things you should do:

    1) buy wine
    2) buy plane ticket to me
    3) drink wine with me

If you want to be able to write checks/use debit card out of his account, it is easiest if he puts you on his account. BUT, if I were him, I would tell him not to do that because y'all aren't married. It's easier to revoke a POA then to get someone else off an account.

With the POA, you should get a general financial to cover all contracts/accounts etc., but you should also get a specific one because some places are a PITA and don't want to permit general POA's (for example, Verizon wireless was the WORST when DH was gone).

He should also get a separate one for health care decisions and if he wants to, do a living will (pull the plug declaration).

Ok, thanks! Yes, I'm not sure which POA's we need, but I guess legal will tell us the specifics. I guess DB will just give me his bank login info and if emergency I could just move money from his to my account? But I'll have POA as well.

I would have him set up a reoccurring deposit to your bank account monthly that you can use for the bills and stuff. $500 or whatever is appropriate. Then you don't have to worry about logging into his account/ being on the account. DH added me when we were engaged, like 2 weeks before marriage, and the banker still gave us a real hard time since we weren't married yet. If you have access to all the bill accounts since ya'll live together, technically the only thing you might really need a POA for would be his truck (if something happens to it).
