October Deployment (satellite phone or modem?)

ok so almost DB leaves soon... i know this is kinda last minute, but I'm wondering if any of your DB's or DH's bought or rented a satellite phone or modem. If so or even if you didn't, which do you think will be more convenient.. internet or phone that has text and stuff? if you have bought/rented, which one?

Satellite phones are expensive, its what we use for communication but its the government. Most bases have personal internet now anyway. You have to pay for it but you get it in your room. If not there are Cafes that you can get internet at or computers you can go to and email from. Where is he going? Almost everywhere in Iraq has great forms of communication and all major bases in Afghanistan do as well. My DH is at a FOB though where like I said we just have the satellite phone. He is not aloud to use cell phones either. I guess we don't find either necessary but he should ask around where he works to see what others say. Especially those that have been where they are going to.

He's going to Afghanistan and he's hoping to share the cost with a couple of his buddies.

Have him check where he is going first. Where my husband is they arent allowed personal sat or cell phones. Everything they told us before he left went out the window, he got transfered to someone different than the rest of his unit, blah.

he's a greenside corpsman so he's set with his group of Marines.. but yeah he says they are allowed.

How will he know they will follow through with the cost? Is it something he can afford if no one else wants to pay for it once they are there?

true that's why we decided to just have him pay for it himself. We actually got a pretty good deal.. expensive, but good deal
