My first deployment, not his...
Hey there....my honey will be deploying in January...He leaves in Nov for training..home for Christmas and then gone in January. He is career Army and has been through this before (many times). This is my first time going through it. Here's the kicker - I moved halfway across the US to be with him last year and now his son and my son live with us. His son has a number of academic, social and behavioral issues that drain me daily. My honey comes home only on weekends...
I'm so scared of his deploying (for obvious reasons, including his safety and being without him)...but dealing with his son on my own terrifies me and I don't know how I'll deal with it. I have a great job here that I love, I love the area and my son is thriving here - so it's not even a consideration to move back to the east coast. Any advice gals? I need a friend so bad..one who understands...no one I know has any clue what to say to me about his deployment..much less the issues with his son... Sad, scared and so in love....... |

I just started a job as a youth treatment counselor in a residential home for adolescent boys with developmental and cognitive disabilities. I am learning a A LOT about this population, so feel free to PM me with any concerns or questions about how to deal with him appropriately.
As for the deployment - you have a higher chance of being hurt in a car accident than he does over here! Just look at this board - hardly ANYONE is posting about their SO being hurt or killed. Focus on your job, and bonding with and learning how to care for his son. Things will absolutely be tough, but you'll be a better person after your struggles, and when he comes home you will all be able to come together as an amazing family!

When I went through my first deployment it was my husband's 2nd and it helped me a lot that he knew what was going on and could tell me what to expect. Hopefully he can give you info so you aren't in the dark about what to expect and he can help you understand and feel more at ease!
