I've heard it is highly recommended to get a power of attorney before DH leaves for any extended period of time. Do any of you recommend it? And where the heck would you go to get one?

POA is a must if he is going to be gone. All you have to do is go to legal on base. Ours here was free. The only thing I recommend is that you get a special POA for PSD and for housing and a general. Usually PSD and housing require a POA just for them if anything happens and you need to take care of it.

Total MUST HAVE!!! you won't be able to do anything that deals with his name without it!! that includes filing taxes. You should always get a general, and specific ones. For instance think about what will be happening while he is gone. Will you move in our out of housing? Will you be PCSing? Filing taxes? some of those things need separate and specific POA's do deal with the different departments. You can go to base legal and get them all done for free make sure to keep them safe at all times.

A POA is a definate, 100% MUST have before a spouse deploys. Your spouse simply can go to legal. Thats the FIRST thing we always update when we know a deployment is coming

YES!!! Defintly. We learned quickly though, that a general one is just for the army, most people want special ones, specified for the exact thing.
here is a site we used for them, and we just went and got them notirized. I did them all, just to be safe, you just never know what can happen in 15mos. http://www.nps.edu/Adminsrv/LegalSer...on/Powers.html |
