How would this impact your household budget? would it make a big difference in how you shop?

I rarely use the commissary here. they have a lot of expired product, run out of product a lot, and price fix.
I will occasionally buy meat there and pet supplies but other than that I use walmart, publix and winn Dixie for most of my shopping.

When we were broke it would of made a huge difference, now we don't have to so it wont change much for us, but for families with a tight budget I could see this having a very negative effect. I would also be super sad to not be able to get commissary sushi anymore .

I have not lived CONUS in... 10 ish years? So I have no idea how this will affect me once I get stateside! We are moving to NC next and I don't even really know what our food buying options will be.

    Well that would be unfortunate
I do 95% of my grocery shopping at the commissary, because I find the quality for the price is better compared to nearby stores.

I like this idea better -
allowing the commissary to sell beer, wine — not currently carried at commissaries — and health and beauty products at a profit, or increasing the price of all commissaries items somewhere around 2 or 3 percent, Philpott reports.

I don't know where in NC you are moving but we're at Bragg and Foodlion is pretty comparable to the commissary here if you shop their deals.

Lets stop the panic first. This is not necessarily going to happen. It is not happening "Soon."
It is one of many proposed alternative plans to reduce the budget. This happens every year with many different expenditures in the military.

I would not be against closing many of them though, determined on an individual basis to be "unnecessary."
The biggest impact I can see is in situation where people living on base are not allowed off for whatever reason.
