Agree or Disagree
Do you agree or disagree with this statement....
"This country was built on hard work and occupied by lazy people." Discuss.

BUT---- I don't see the statements as mutually exclusive, or one as a result/consequence of the other. This country was built on hard work. Yes, some people worked very hard to build the country, and some people work very hard to keep it a country founded on certain ideals. This country was...... occupied by lazy people. Sure. I know some lazy people who live here.

As a general opinion people have of this country...I would have to agree. Though there are SO many people that work hard. I think it's more like the minority of lazy people in this country give it a bad name. The majority is too busy working to care or lift a voice.

To an extent, I both agree and disagree....
It was built on hard work... you had to bust your ass to farm your land/physically make your products and thats how (most) people made their money... Now, its a much different place... the highest paying jobs are for people who sit behind a desk, some dont believe that to be "hard work" (I disagree, after hearing about the stress my DH goes through, some desk jobs are no piece of cake) I think it just depends on the context of the statement and what you consider hard work... I think people worked much harder then because they had to, now... I wouldn't say lazy, but I dont think a lot of people would last very long if we went back to how it was 100 years ago...

Literally, I agree with it. People worked hard to found it, and there are some people who are lazy that occupy it.
Figuratively, no... Because I don't believe the majority of people who live in America are "lazy" people... I do think everyone has the ability to, and deserves to, be lazy every one in a while ![]() Also, to go off what Sam said, I don't equate convenience with laziness. Hard work goes into creating and maintaining new technology, hard work goes into earning the money to pay for it, we're able to do more faster with it, so the idea that technology has made us lazy hasn't really made much sense to me. Yet, there are people who can take the use of technology to an extreme and if they let it, it can cause them to become lazy.

It's not an American-only sentiment, either ... alot of countries and cultures have this as their history or current way of life.
