What does engaged mean to you? More specifically, what are the steps that happen in a relationship that at a certain point, you say you are now engaged?

when one partner proposes and the other accepts. then you are engaged.

I know it's different for everyone, but for us we weren't engaged until he proposed with a ring. (we had been together for 6 years when this happened and had always spoke of marriage and knew we would eventually get married, but we didn't consider it official until he did the traditional, on-bended-knee proposal)

I think that once two people agree to get married, they could consider themselves engaged.

For us, though, it wasn't "official" until Dh asked, gave me a ring, and I said yes.

The question has to be asked, ring is optional cause some girls don't wear jewelry or want a ring.

I said "will you marry me" ring optional. I almost also selected tentatively planning a wedding date but I remember tentatively planning a wedding before we were considering ourselves engaged and it definitely didn't count.

Talking about marriage and deciding together that you both are ready for that to actually be your next step are two different things in my opinion. Once you agree that marriage is the next step of committment you want to make together, you, in some way or another, become engaged. The "some way or another" part is up to your personal preferences, the most common being a ring and a question.

To me personally it's "Will you marry me?" and a "Yes" reply. I don't think a ring is a necessity, if two people love each other and want to get married, that's all that should matter.
