They are Fighting for your Freedom of Speech!"
I've seen this statement come up a lot here, and on a few other boards that I belong to. So I felt like this would be a good topic to debate. When you hear the statement:
"They are fighting for your freedom of speech"? What is one of your first thoughts when you hear this? Do you agree, or disagree? Usually it is said in a situation where someone is seemingly acting ungrateful, or during a venting session. I've observed that you rarely will hear a service member say this, usually it is the spouse or significant other who makes the statement, which I think says a lot. Here's my opinion: I really dislike that statement. I find it incredibly offensive, and it reeks of entitlement. I don't feel like any soldier is fighting for my right to freedom of speech. My ancestors fought for that ish years ago, thank you very much. What do you guys think? I'm open to any and all perspectives.

They are not fighting for the western world, we are not hard done by in any manner. I have said this time and time again. A soldier's job is not just not to defend one's own country when it it's threatened, A soldier or any military member's job is to defend those that can not defend themselves, no matter the situation, country, this includes; war, natural disaster, etc etc.

I don't agree with it. Our freedom of speech was established through the constitution. If anyone fought for our freedom of speech, it would be the men (and yes, women) who died in the Revolutionary War. |

The ONLY time I don't dislike it is when the Westboro Baptists Church is protesting funerals. Even then, I feel like saying that PAST troops died for their right to free speech is more appropriate than anything else. Otherwise, I don't find it relevant to what the troops are currently doing, and I think it's a stuck up thing to say.

With the situation and war we are facing now... they are not fighting for my freedoms because my freedoms are not under-attack...
So no, I do not like the saying... I believe its false and anyone who believes it has a misunderstanding of why the military is fighting right now...

Exactly! Exactly, exactly. That's usually the only time I hear it said.
