Do you think kids should be able to have their cell phones in school?
Should they be required to leave them in lockers or back pack? Turned off and on their person? Not even allowed inside the school?

I think they should be allowed to have them, but they should be turned off (not on silent or vibrate) and they should be kept in their pocket, backpack or locker. My daughter has hers at school because in order for her to use it to stay in touch with me from point A to point B, she has to keep it on her during school hours.
But, she knows that if she ever brings it out during school, it will either get lost, stolen or taken away by a staff member. She also knows that if any of those things happen, she will not be getting a replacement, and I will not go and get the phone from the office for her.

They should be in their lockers and not on their person at all. There is no reason for a cell phone during school hours. If an emergency comes up the student/parent would have to notify the school anyway, so calling the school and getting a message through makes more sense. All it does is create a distraction, entice cheating and piss off teachers. I wouldn't say leave it at home because some kids need to call for rides or let their parents know where they're going, but they should not be in class with them!

I think they should do what my school did.
OFF and AWAY during and in between classes. You were only allowed to use them during lunch and before and after school.

I am against cell phone use in schools. My friends and I texted in class and it was beyond rude. I'm embarrased to say we did it. I think that cell phones, if needed (I had one to use to call my dad after practice to pick me up) should be turned OFF during school hours. It just makes sense to me.

I'm a teacher, and it would really irritate me if any students were bringing cell phones into the classroom. They are there to learn and be productive, there's no reason for students to have them in class. I totally understand why they would need them coming and going to school, but they should be left in the lockers, turned off! |

I was just thinking about this last night. DH's son is a HS senior and I saw that he had made some Facebook status updates while he was in school, and I was thinking instead of being on Facebook he should be paying attention in class.
I think kids should be allowed to have their phones but they need to be turned off and put in their pocket, backpack/purse or locker.

I had a cell that was supposed to be used ONLY to call my mom to let her know when I'd be done with practice or game. Yes, I used it during school also, but never during class. Our school was super strict and they were not allowed inside the classroom. They had to be kept in our lockers and on silent/off. If there was an emergency, whoever involved would contact the school and we'd be brought to the office. Simple as that.

I am a 5th grade teacher and I can't tell you how many cell phones I had to take away last year because they had them on or out of there backpack...they would text each other during the day...it was insane...
While I don't think a 5th grader NEEDS a phone...I do think that students should be able to have them with them...but OFF and in their backpack... My class this year is SO much better...I don't even know who does or does not have a phone...because if they do have them...they keep them put away
