    Gambling

    Advertisements
So I've seen dozens of debates in regards to addictions and diseases from alcoholism, to smoking, to video game addiction. But I don't remember seeing anything about gambling, so I thought I'd see what your thoughts are on it. This thought was brought on by this article I saw on a San Diego newstation today about casinos using aromas to trigger more gambling by patrons.

So my question is, if you feel that we as a society have a social responsibility to not encourage addictions, how do you feel about gambling. Do you think its just something people do for fun, or do you feel its a true addiction that shouldn't be encouraged?

I think people can get addicted to it, but I don't care if they do. As long as its not me or DH, I don't really have an opinion on the matter

for many people, gambling is an addiction. a serious and difficult addiction. i'm not sure what there is to debate...

i don't think it should be made illegal if that's what you're asking, just because i don't tend to think that the government should regulate us like that, and people will do it regardless (betting on games, races, etc.)

I think that people with addictive personalities could become addicted to gambling. There are SEVERAL people in my family who go gambling all the time, and it's gotten to be more than just a fun getaway.

Personally, I can't see myself ever getting into such a thing, but it's been in Russian literature for hundreds of years now. Along with drinking, gambling is a huge addiction in Russia, so it makes sense that people here would be addicted to it.

Addictiosn that cost ALOT of money truely baffle me and I cannot understand it AT ALL. (you know - being able to FEED the addiction, first, is necessary BEFORE you can even become addicted) .. like illegal drugs that are costly and so on - how can people even shell out enough money to get addicted to it tin the first place is beyond me.

My husband's mom got in a fight with his dad because of her gambling addiction. She drove off, crashed into a telephone poll, and died when he was 2.

Stealing and selling drugs/prescriptions is how my Dh's mom did it.

I think that for some it is just for fun. BUT I know for others it is an addiction when you go and blow a whole paycheck at the casino because you have to win back what you've lost. Without thought of anything else it has become an addiction.

Personally, I feel it's an addictive and financially destructive behavior that should be discouraged.
