What do you think of this quote "Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner." Tao Te Ching (Mitchell translation), Chapter 9

The whole passage: Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill. Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt. Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench. Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner. Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.

which breaks down to: Be who you are, Want what you have, and Do what you can.

I think your breakdown of it takes it to the extreme. The quote tells me not to get wrapped up in things that are beyond my control. I know that I can do my very best at a job, but I can't control what others think of it. If I get wrapped up in what they think, that means I'm giving them power over me.

This is how I read it:

Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill.
If you take on too much, you WILL eventually overload.

Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt.
Not totally sure about this one, but how I take it is, if you spread yourself too thin and try to please everyone, you will soon not have anything left to give

Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench.
If you are never happy with what you have, you never WILL be happy and will always want more

Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner.
If you always worry about what others think of you, you give them power over you and how you feel about yourself

Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.
Do what you can, and try to enjoy what you do

And I agree with most of the above.

The breakdown was what the ministers sermon was about this Sunday. The reading was one from the service (Tao Te Ching chap 8 & 9).

I don't think the connection is extreme at all though, it was a very moving sermon and helped me out just when I needed it. (by giving me lots of food for thought) I am not a minister though so I can't explain it nearly as well

That is how I took it as well although I do understand that most people take Taoism in very many different ways and that is all good

I definitely agree. I see people striving to gain the approval of others, and it saddens me.
